Hello and welcome back, friend!
Before you roll your eyes and think I’m about to tell you a robot is coming for your job, let me stop you right there. This episode is not about replacement. It’s about leverage.
Think of AI as the tireless, ridiculously efficient assistant you’ve always wished you could clone — except this one never sleeps, doesn’t need coffee, and happily handles the soul-crushing repetitive stuff so you can do the work that actually matters: building real relationships.
Today we’re diving into how to become what I like to call an “AI Community Manager” — someone who uses tools like ChatGPT not as a crutch, but as a genuine force multiplier. Let’s get into it.
AI Isn’t One Magic Robot (And That’s a Good Thing)
The term “AI Community Manager” is actually pretty misleading. It makes it sound like one single robot is going to run your entire community. That’s nonsense.
What actually works is treating AI like a chef treats their kitchen tools. You don’t use the same knife for everything. You have a paring knife, a cleaver, a bread knife — each with its own perfect job.
I break AI down into three practical categories:
- Generative AI (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) — for creating first drafts and sparking ideas
- Analytical AI — for understanding the vibe and health of your community
- Automation AI — for handling the boring, repetitive tasks
Each tool has one specific job: to free you up for the human work that no algorithm can replicate.
My Go-To Generative AI Workflow (That Actually Works)
Staring at a blank page is one of the biggest time wasters in community management. I used to dread it. Now I barely do it.
Here’s my process: I use AI for the first 80%, then I bring my expertise for the final 20%.
For example, I might prompt it with:
“Generate seven icebreaker questions for a community of freelance graphic designers who are burned out and looking for creative motivation.”
The AI spits out options. I pick the best two, completely rewrite them in our community’s voice, add context from recent member conversations, and suddenly I have something that feels personal instead of generic.
I also use it to summarize long industry reports and pull out three juicy discussion prompts. What used to take me an hour now takes ten minutes.
My unbreakable rule: Never, ever copy and paste raw AI content into your community.
Your members can smell generic AI content from a mile away. It creates this strange sterile feeling — like walking into a beautiful house that somehow has no soul. The final 20% (your personality, your strategic insight, your humor) is where the magic happens. That part is non-negotiable.
How to Stop Being the 24/7 Moderation Hero
Burnout in community management is painfully common, and it almost always comes from the grind of repetitive tasks.
This is where automation AI becomes your best friend.
I use AI tools to auto-flag obvious spam, toxic comments, or off-topic posts. The AI doesn’t delete anything — it just creates a review queue. I still make the final call, but I’m no longer playing 24/7 spam police.
Even simpler? A well-trained FAQ chatbot. “Where are the community guidelines?” “How do I introduce myself?” “When is the next event?” — these questions get asked constantly. Let the bot handle the top five questions and watch your sanity meter climb.
And then there’s sentiment analysis. Instead of trying to manually read every comment in a 2,000-person community, I get a quick dashboard view that tells me the overall emotional temperature. Is excitement dropping? Is frustration bubbling up around a particular topic? I get the pulse check without the exhaustive labor.
The Brutal Truth: Where Most People Go Wrong
Let’s be honest about the risks, because I’ve seen some real disasters.
The biggest pitfall is erosion of authenticity. When people get lazy and start pumping out unedited AI content, the community starts to feel like a corporate brochure. Members leave. Engagement dies. The vibe goes flat.
Another serious concern is data privacy. I treat every AI tool like I’m hiring a new employee. I review their privacy policy. I never feed sensitive member information into random free tools. Just because something is convenient doesn’t mean it’s safe.
Here’s the rule I live by:
Let AI manage the system. You manage the people.
AI is terrible at empathy, nuance, and reading between the lines. That’s your territory. Protect it fiercely.
Your New Superpower
The main takeaway I want you to carry with you is this: Stop thinking of AI as a replacement and start seeing it as your ultimate leverage.
Used wisely, these tools help you:
– Create first drafts at lightning speed
– Automate the repetitive tasks that cause burnout
– Get clear data so you’re not guessing about community health
All of this so you can spend way more time on strategy, connection, celebration, and empathy — the things that actually build thriving communities.
The future doesn’t belong to the community managers who reject AI. It doesn’t belong to the ones who let AI replace them either.
It belongs to the ones who become masterful at working with AI while staying deeply, unmistakably human.
That’s the sweet spot. And it’s available to all of us.
Thanks for spending this time with me today!
Join me for Episode 20: Community for Introverts, where we’ll explore how to design low-pressure, high-value spaces that make everyone — especially the quiet ones — feel genuinely excited to participate.
In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you. Are you already using AI in your community work? What’s working? What feels scary? Drop your thoughts in the comments — I read every single one.
Until next time, keep building with both wisdom and wonder.
